Our group focuses on Additive Manufacturing, but we never underestimate the usefulness of conventional manufacturing processes. This course provides fundamental knowledge of manufacturing processes such as Casting, Welding, and Forming. Learnings from this course are very helpful in dealing with any advanced manufacturing process. Dr. Sajan Kapil taught this course once to 2nd year B. Tech students of IIT Guwahati in 2020.
We have designed this course in 2019 and Dr. Sajan Kapil has taught this course once. In a week there are two theory lectures (1 hr. each) and one laboratory session of 3 hrs. The hands-on practice of CAD/CAM and operating the 3D printing machines during this course help students understand the process in a more lucid manner.
This course is a fusion of hardware and software for manufacturing processes. In the first part of this course, we teach the students professional CAD software and CAM software for programming 3/5-axis CNC machines and robotic arms. Once they learn the CAD / CAM then in the second half of the course, they go for hand-on-practice sessions on cutting-edge manufacturing equipment such as laser cutting, engraving, marking, deposition, Metal & Polymer 3D Printers, Plasma cutting, 3-axis CNC machining, 5-axis CNC machining, 6-axis Robotic machining, Robotic Welding, Wire-cut EDM, UTM, CMM, Microscope, Hardness testing, profile projector etc. After learning all of that, the students are asked to prepare a group project where they need to design and manufacture a real-life product.
The syllabus of this course is divided six modules viz., Linear Algebra, Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Integral Transform, Partial Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics. So far, many of us have learned the method of computing / calculating operators such as determinant, matrix multiplication, inverse, etc. While our Objectives are to
Dr. Sajan Kapil has been teaching (Linear Algebra and Calculus) this course from 2022.
